Indiana land surveying licenses must be renewed by July 31. Do you have all the credits you need?

A quick review of the requirements:

  • You need 24 total CEU hours earned between Aug. 1, 2018 and July 31, 2020
  • At least 6 must qualify as “mandatory” credits
  • No more than 12 can come from webinars or other forms of distance learning

If you find yourself coming up short, there are a few things you can do:

  • ISPLS is offering CEU-approved webinars every Friday through the end of June that you can still sign up for:
  • There are some other organizations still considering in-person events before the July 31 deadline. As soon as ISPLS learns of any confirmed opportunities, we will immediately publicize them via email and social media.
  • BE CAREFUL of paying for distance learning from any organization not listed as an approved Continuing Education Provider on the Professional Licensing Agency website:
  • If you earned more than 24 hours last renewal cycle (Aug. 1, 2016 – July 31, 2018), you can rollover up to 4 earned but unused credits into this cycle (i.e. If you earned 30 hours last cycle despite only needing 24, you can take four of those six extra hours and apply them to this renewal cycle).

Not sure how many hours you have? Login to the ISPLS Membership App and click on “My CEUs.” This will bring up a list of every CEU you've earned at all ISPLS conventions and ISPLS-sponsored webinars since 2018, all in one combined transcript. PLEASE NOTE the 2018 ISPLS Convention was outside the current renewal cycle. Don’t count those hours – or any others earned before Aug. 1, 2018 – unless you’re using the rollover exception.

As of this writing, the State Board of Registration has offered no indication it will relax its license renewal requirements. It is the guidance of ISPLS that all Indiana-licensed surveyors should assume these requirements will stand as opposed to assuming the Board will make allowances because of COVID-19.

That being said, Indiana Code (IC 25-1-4-3.2) says state boards like the State Board of Registration for Land Surveyors are required to allow "at least one-half" of all CEU requirements be taken care of via distance learning methods, which means they would have the authority to increase the threshold for webinar-based CEUs beyond the normal 12 hours.

The next section of the same statute (IC 25-1-4-4) says the same boards are allowed to grant waivers for CEU requirements for service in the armed forces, incapacitating illness or injury, or "other circumstances determined by the board or agency."

Again, ISPLS cannot guarantee the Board will make any such accommodations, so our first recommendation is to proceed as though you will be required to submit the full 24 hours like normal. Should the Board make an official decision changing that, we will immediately pass on the news through all our communication channels.

You can contact the Board of Registration at or (317) 234-3022. ISPLS staff is also happy to help with what we can. Email us at
