ISPLS Webinar - basic least squares for land surveyors

To introduce surveyors to the concepts of Relative Positional Accuracy and 95% Confidence Interval per 865 IAC 1-12-2(h) and how to test Relative Positional Accuracy by a “minimally constrained, correctly weighted least squares adjustment” per 865 IAC 1-12-7(f).


Learning Objectives:

  • To introduce you to the basic concepts of least square adjustment.
  • To show how relative positional accuracy for Indiana surveys can be estimated by a least squares adjustment.
  • To learn about common mistakes made in adjustments.
  • To learn how to perform a simple least squares adjustment.


*A short quiz at the end of the webinar will be required to qualify for CEUs.


Speaker Bio: Bryan Catlin, PS

Bryan Catlin, PS is the Technical Supervisor for the Marion County Surveyor’s Office where he is responsible for section corner perpetuation, MCSO survey projects for other City of Indianapolis and Marion County government agencies and creating and maintaining GIS data among other duties. He is the immediate past president of the Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors and has written the Legal Surveys column for the Hoosier Surveyor since 2012. Bryan graduated from Purdue University with Bachelor of Science in Land Surveying Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering (geodesy) degrees.
